Birken Books~ 1984

This classic science fiction book was one of the best books I have read in a long time. Set in an alternate version of the year 1984, we are thrown into a world of a broken and obedient population with constant warfare ruled by the ominous Big Brother. Disobedience or even the slightest hint of insubordination or non-conformity is met with a trip to the Ministry of Love which everyone knows is an equivalent to torture and death.

Winston and Julia are two members of the Party (the dictatorship that governs Oceania) but neither of them believe in what they are doing and feel different from the rest of the “sheep’’. Winston, the main character has never dared question the Party because he knows the risks-until he meets Julia. These two fall in love but can they go against a society where love is seen as a crime and punishable by death?

I immensely enjoyed this book, suggested to me by my father, but it always gave me a slightly eerie feeling maybe because this future does not seem so improbable and there certainly are parallels to our present world. It made me think about the future and what it might bring as well.

Altogether I definitely recommend this book because it has a fascinating story, is a good classic sci fi book and makes you think.

" War is Peace.

Freedom is Slavery.

Ignorance is Strength"

- George Orwell, 1984
