Birken Books~ The Red Queen

In a dystopic world where the Silvers, elites with superpower abilities rule over the lowly Reds. The only difference is the colour of their blood. Everything changes when Mare Barrow a seventeen-year-old Red in a poor village called the Stilts gets taken to the Royal Palace. There she discovers that she has deadly powers of her own. But how can this be? Her blood is red. She will find herself swept up in a deadly game that she does not understand where the Silver royalty will do anything to keep the secret from getting out including transforming her into a lost Silver princess to hide this truth. Mare will have to choose between her people and the newly founded Scarlet guard, or her new life as the lost Silver princess Mareena. Will this consume her?

This has been one of my favorite recent books. It has a small love story, but is mostly a book of survival and learning who to trust, so it does not take over the plot. It is very well written with characters that are easy to relate to. This is definitely one of my recommendations.

“In school, we learned about the world before ours, about the angels and gods that lived in the sky, ruling the earth with kind and loving hands. Some say those are just stories, but I don’t believe that. The gods rule us still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind.”
